This page explains the categories and choices available on the " Build a Plan " page in order to assist in customizing your reading plan.


English Bible Plans

Bible Plan Selection  

  • Preferred Language (Choose from over 1,200 languages)
  • Preferred Version (Choose from nearly 2,900 translations)

  • Include scriptures?

    Next, choose whether or not you want to include scriptures. WBP offers ebooks that serve as an guide if you want to use your own Bible but still want a reading plan.

  • Select Reading Duration

    Select a duration. For the more aggressive, read the entire Bible in as little as 3 months or for the most leisurely, read the entire Bible in as long as 3 years. Or, instead of a set duration, read from 1 to 6 chapters per day. Optionally, create a custom plan by entering the reading start and reading end dates.

    30 Days

    Reading Plans

    Use this with the 30 Day 1 Book theme and intensively study a single book for a month.

    3 month

    Reading Plans

    For the most aggressive readers, read the Bible cover to cover by investing 45-60 minutes a day. In 90 days you'll see the big picture of God's great story unfold before you.

    6 Month

    Reading Plans

    In just 30-45 minutes per day, you could read the entire Bible, cover to cover, over the course of 6 months. Choose a Historical Reading Plan and read the Bible in the order the books were written. Whatever your pace, the point is to make daily Bible reading a habit.

    9 Month

    Reading Plans

    The Bible is a rich treasure and gift to us from God. A daily reading program that weaves together both testaments in an enlightening and enriching experience of our history as God's people.

    12 month

    Reading Plans

    The one year Bible plan! Commit 10-15 minutes each day and read the entire Bible in 1 year. Mix it up by choosing from several themes. Read every day, 5 days or 6 days per week. Whatever your interest or time availability, we've got you covered.

    18 month

    Reading Plans

    Choose a "Straight" Reading Plan and Read from Genesis to Revelation (and the Apocrypha if available) in 18 months.

    24 month

    Reading Plans

    Take your time to read the entire Bible, cover to cover, in 2 years. Choose a Chronological Reading Plan and read the Bible in the order the events occurred.

    36 month

    Reading Plans

    Our most leisurely plan. Spend 3-5 minutes per day and read the entire Bible, including the Apocrypha (if available in your version), in 3 years. Choose a "Sectional" plan and read daily from the Old and New Testaments, Psalms, and Proverbs

    Commentaries are available only with these themes:


  • Straight (Genesis to Revelation).

    • Read the Bible straight through from Genesis to Revelation.
      • This plan includes the Apocrypha depending on the version you choose.
      • Daily Sort Order: Old Testament, New Testament

  • Straight (Catholic Sort for Versions with Apocrypha).

    • Read the Bible straight through from Genesis through the Apocrypha to Revelation.
      • Daily Sort Order: Old Testament, New Testament, Apocrypha.

  • 1 Book Deep Dive.

    • An intense study of a single book.
      • Genesis to Revelation only (Apocrypha not supported)

  • Old Testament Only (Genesis to Malachi)


  • Torah - 5 Books of Moses (Genesis to Deuteronomy)

    • Also known as the Pentateuch

  • Old Testament Major & Minor Prophets

    • Major Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah (Including Lamentations), Ezekiel, and Daniel.
    • Minor Prophets: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.

  • Psalms & Proverbs


  • New Testament Only (Matthew to Revelation)


  • Apostles & Paul (Gospels & Epistles)

    • Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
    • Epistles of Paul: Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon.

  • Apocrypha Only

    • Also known as Deuterocanonical books.
      • Religious writings that are not part of the official accepted collection (the canon) of the Bible



    The following themes support only time durations.

    Chapter durations and commentaries are not available for the following themes:


  • Sectional

    • Read sections from the Old Testament, the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs each reading day.
      • This plan includes the Apocrypha depending on the version you choose.

  • Sectional Plus

    • Similar to the Sectional plan. When you have finished this plan, you will have read the Old Testament once and the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs twice.
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.

  • Old/New

    • Read sections from the Old Testament and the New Testament each reading day.
      • This plan includes the Apocrypha depending on the version you choose.
      • Daily Sort Order: Old Testament, New Testament.

  • Old/New 1x3

    • Similar to the Old/New plan. When you have finished this plan, you will have read the Old Testament once and the New Testament 3 times.
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.
      • Daily Sort Order: Old Testament, New Testament.

  • Old/New by Book

    • Custom Developed by a WBP requestor.
      • Alternate entire book readings in the Old and New Testaments.
        • Read all of Genesis. Next read all of Matthew. Next read all of Exodus, etc..
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.

  • New/Old

    • Read sections from the New Testament and the Old Testament each reading day.
      • This plan includes the Apocrypha depending on the version you choose.
      • Daily Sort Order: New Testament, Old Testament.

  • New/Old 3x1

    • Similar to the New/Old plan. When you have finished this plan, you will have read the New Testament 3 times and the Old Testament once.
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.
      • Daily Sort Order: New Testament, Old Testament.

  • New/Old by Book

    • Custom Developed by a WBP requestor.
      • Alternate entire book readings in the New and Old Testaments.
        • Read all of Matthew. Next read all of Genesis. Next read all of Mark, etc..
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.

  • Chronological

    • Read the Entire Bible in the Order the Events Occurred
      • This plan includes the Apocrypha depending on the version you choose.

  • Chronological (New Testament Only)

    • Read the New Testament in the Order the Events Occurred
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.

  • Historical

    • Read the Entire Bible in the Order the Books were Written
      • This plan includes the Apocrypha depending on the version you choose.



    The following themes support only chapter durations.

    Commentaries are not supported for the following themes:


  • Genre by Chapter

    • Read chapters from multiple Genres depending on the number of chapters per day you choose.
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.



    The following themes have preset durations that can't be changed.

  • 5x5

    • 12 Month Duration
    • Read the New Testament for 5 minutes a day, 5 Days per week (Weekdays Only)
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.

  • 10x5

    • 6 Month Duration
    • Read the New Testament for 10 minutes a day, 5 Days per week (Weekdays Only)
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.

  • 1 Year Old/New by Chapter

    • 12 Month Duration
    • Read chapter(s) from the Old Testament and the New Testament each reading day.
      • In 1 year, you will have read the entire Bible.
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.
      • Daily Sort Order: Old Testament, New Testament.

  • 1 Year New/Old by Chapter

    • 12 Month Duration
    • Read chapter(s) from the New Testament and the Old Testament each reading day.
      • In 1 year, you will have read the entire Bible.
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.
      • Daily Sort Order: New Testament, Old Testament.

  • M'Cheyne

    • Created in 1843 by Robert Murray M'Cheyne. Click here for more information
    • 12 Month Duration
    • Read through the New Testament and Psalms twice and the Old Testament once. The 1843 M'Cheyne plan has two sets of readings; The "Family" set is meant to read by a group or family while the "Secret" set is meant to be read and studied by the individual.
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.

  • Daily Genre

    • Created by Michael Coley. Click here for more information
    • 12 Month Duration
    • Each day, read from 1 of 7 different genres (Epistles, The Law, History, Psalms, Poetry, Prophecy, and Gospels).
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.

  • Scriptural Association

    • The Thematic Bible Reading Plan developed by Craig DesJardins at www.faithtacoma.org.
    • 12 Month Duration
    • Each Day, read from multiple books that have a thematic association with each other.
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.

  • Grant Horner's "The System"

    • Created by Grant Horner. Read more about "The System" here.
    • 12 Month Duration
    • Read 10 chapters each day from different sections of the Bible.
      • In one year, you will have read many books multiple times and some books once. See matrix for details
      • This plan does not include the Apocrypha even if the version you choose has it.

    Next choose to read by verse or by paragraph. Bible versions that have right to left reading only come in verse mode. Examples

    Chapter by chapter commentaries are only available using the "chapter" durations with the following themes: 1 Book Deep Dive, Straight (Genesis to Revelation), Old Testament Only, New Testament Only, Genre by Chapter, Psalms & Proverbs, Apostles & Paul, Old Testament Major and Minor Prophets, and Torah. WBP offers full or partial commentaries in the following languages: English, Spanish, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Dutch, French, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Latvian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, and Telugu. World Bible Plans is the only site where you can get free Bible reading plans with commentaries as eBooks.



    Include Cross References

    Free Bible Reading Plans with Cross References:

    In your Bible, ever notice the references at the bottom of a verse or at the bottom or right side of the page? It might look something like (Gen 1:5). WBP offers abbreviated cross references as well as full verse text cross references. WBP has developed a way to insert the actual referenced verse into your Bible reading plan. World Bible Plans offers optional verse by verse cross references in your reading plan with the following restrictions:

  • Verse by verse cross references are not available for copyrighted versions.
  • Your plan must include scriptures.
  • Only works with a "Verse" format.
  • Verse by verse cross references are available for all themes.

    • There are five options for Cross References. Example

      • No Cross References

      • Abbreviations Only

        • Both Testaments : See cross reference abbreviations from all testaments. See Example
        • Opposite Testaments Only : See cross references from the opposite testament only (Old Testament verses will have New Testament cross references and vice versa. See Example

      • Full Verse Text Cross References : Full verse cross references are available for the opposite testament only. Old Testament scriptures show New Testament cross references and vice versa.

        Next, Choose to display the header of each new day by day, date, or both (Select your reading start date)
